Box Office Revenue Flows

By Seth Frank | February 27, 2008

Really interesting data visualization of box office revenue in last Sunday’s New York Times. Interesting to compare the difference between 2007 and 1997 (the year of Titanic). Probably the biggest difference is the number of big grosses now. Methinks this is probably because of global distribution. Movies are now rolled out globally, rather than Tokyo getting a movie six months later. I sort of think we are going to hit a high water mark soon and online alternatives will begin to change this. Sort of like the music industry which hit a high water mark around 2000 (think Backstreet Boys, ‘Nsynch, and Britney) and has plummeted since.
